The role(s) of the cerebellum remain uncertain, but one emerging idea is that it acts as a predictor, making short term estimates of the sensory outcomes of actions - a "forward model". My research group has been exploring this theme for some time, and the talk will describe recent results, using methods ranging from single unit recording, TMS, fMRI and patient studies. In this talk I will review some of this work that suggests the cerebellum contributes to a state estimate of the motor system, and suggest ways in which such a system might also contribute to cognitive functions.
