Neuroscience Facilities

The University's neuroscience infrastructure includes unparalleled facilities for multi-species neuroimaging. The Institute manages the only non-human primate MR scanner in the UK (housed in the Henry Wellcome Building for Neuroecology).

The University also has a 3T MRI system dedicated for human clinical and basic research, and we operate a 7T scanner for pre-clinical (avian and rodent) studies.

A human PET scanner has been installed at the MR Centre and further pre-clinical PET and associated radiochemistry are planned.

No other site in the UK houses such a complementary range of equipment for non-invasive imaging. Thus, we can offer extensive training and experience in neuroimaging, interfacing with a range of techniques including neuropharmacology, electrophysiology, cognitive neuroscience and neurology. Across the University we also support optical recording, multi-electrode neurophysiology, confocal and fluorescence imaging, a brain bank for analysis of structural and chemical changes in ageing and neurodegenerative disorders, and the only brain bank for molecular changes in human brain development. The Institute's outstanding in vivo recording facilities are located in high quality animal accommodation directed by Prof Paul Flecknell, deputy chair of the NC3Rs.

The North-East Regional e-Science Centre (NEReSC) based in Newcastle is used for the storage and analysis of large-scale data sets as generated by neuroimaging or electrophysiology experiments. There is also ongoing investment by the local Hospitals Trust in a new state-of-the-art Clinical Neurosciences Centre and neurological ward, to be based in the £300M new hospital adjacent to the main Institute buildings.

University Facilities

We have become one of the fastest growing UK universities. This has allowed us to invest in world-class academics, facilities and new equipment.

As a postgraduate at Newcastle, you will have access to first-rate IT, scientific, technical and advisory services which are provided centrally, which continually benefit from investment and improvements:
