We offer both Doctoral (PhD and MD) and Masters (MRes and MPhil) level research degrees in all our research topics.
Funded PhD opportunities include annually available studentships from the Medical Research Council (MRC), Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), and Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The Institute of Neuroscience also has an annual allocation of funded studentships under the Wellcome Trust 4-year PhD Programme in Systems Neuroscience. This is for outstanding students with backgrounds in physical sciences, mathematics, computer sciences and engineering, who wish to apply their skills and gain new knowledge in fundamental areas in neuroscience. Other studentships, funded by external charities, Newcastle University or other sources, may also be available. Clinically qualified members of the Institute can provide supervision for MD degrees.
Other opportunities for PhD and MPhil degrees may be available by arrangement with individual supervisors.
The MRes in Neuroscience is a Masters degree which combines taught elements with a substantive research project. Both taught modules and the research project are focused on subjects within the Neuroscience area. A limited number of bursaries is available for students registering on this degree.
We welcome enquiries at all times from potential research students.
