In October 2005 the Institute of Neuroscience entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the RIKEN Brain Science Institute (BSI) based at Wako City near Tokyo. RIKEN BSI was established in October 1997 and conducts research around four designated areas: Understanding, Protecting, Creating and Nurturing the Brain. RIKEN BSI has more than 50 research laboratories and is Japan's largest centre for neuroscience research. The aim of the MOU with Newcastle is to develop programmes of research around common interests and complementary approaches. The MOU will run for an initial period of five years and will support an exchange programme and the establishment of a number of joint research projects.
