The Institute conducts research that tackles important issues of mental health. We are a major centre for research in affective disorders, particularly bipolar disorder, and dementias and conduct a wide range of other projects spanning schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, and cognitive behavioural therapies. Clinical studies are involved in characterising the biological and neuropsychological features of these disorders in well defined cohorts, and evaluating new treatments through trials. Our research is conducted in multidisciplinary teams that allow basic science discovery to be translated into clinical interventions and for our neurobiology to be informed by clinical features. Biological targets include research on the role of adrenal hormones in the aetiology of affective disorders and the role and regulation of cortical network oscillations in cognitive changes in schizophrenia. Our programme of development of treatments spans both pharmacological interventions and cognitive behavioural therapy, programmes of which have been widely adopted for clinical use.
