Research Interests

I lead the MR physics team at the MR Centre whose role is to develop new scanning methodology to address hypothesis led research in our clinical populations. My main personal research programme revolves around the detection of CNS disease processes using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Spectroscopy (MRS).

Current Work

Current research is focussing on developing new methods to measure tissue damage within the brain using multi-parametric analysis of data from an array of MR techniques. These include quantitative relaxation imaging (T1 and T2), diffusion tensor imaging, cerebral blood flow imaging (arterial spin labeling) and metabolic measurements using proton MR spectroscopic imaging. The methods are being applied in two large patient groups to characterise diffuse tissue damage following head injury and in neurodegenerative disorders.

Other projects include:
• measurement of muscle and heart energetics using 31P MR spectroscopy
• development of quantitative 7Li MR spectroscopy
• techniques for resting-state fMRI
• development of positive contrast techniques for cell tracking
