Our Pre-sessional English course is a short, intensive, academic English course. It's for Newcastle University offer holders who need to improve their English before starting a degree.

This course will improve your English language skills to meet the demands of your chosen degree. 

On the course you will:

  • receive teaching and assessments tailored to the requirements of university study
  • adapt to living and studying in the UK before you start your degree

You'll develop a range of skills including:

  • English language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing in a university context
  • presentation skills on different areas of academic interest
  • a focus on your chosen subject via a written project
  • help with independent study using our online materials
  • contextual study skills to help you adjust to the culture of a UK university

Course length

The length of course depends on your level of English and what your degree requires. We offer a 6 or a 10-week course.

You'll be in class for 20 hours a week and we have a maximum of 18 students per class.


You'll be assessed to make sure you fulfil the conditions of your offer.  Assessment methods include:

  • extended essays
  • listening and reading
  • presentations


On achieving the English language score you need, and satisfying any other conditions of your offer, you can progress on to your chosen course.

The cost of your textbooks and other learning materials are £85 (10 weeks) and £55 (6 weeks).

Entry Requirements

To study on this course you need to have an offer of a place on a degree at Newcastle.

Course entry requirements

If you haven't already applied for a degree at Newcastle, you need to check the entry requirements of the course you're interested in.

Each course has its own entry requirements that you must meet. You can search for the course you are interested in to find out specific requirements:

Newcastle University English Language Policy

To meet the UK government's regulations, you need to show that you meet our English language requirements.

For degree level study (NQF level 6) you need to meet level 2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in the four subskills:

  • reading
  • writing
  • listening
  • speaking

An IELTS score of 5.5overall and for each subskill, demonstrates B2 level competence. If you have less than 5.5, overall or for an individual subskill, you will not be able to progress onto a degree at Newcastle. This is a minimum score, which may be different to the score specified on the course you're interested in.


You need to be 17 years old, or older.

As an international student, if you have received an offer from us you will have a condition to prove your English language skills. This means that you need to meet the IELTS score, or equivalent, as specified on the course information. If you don't meet the English language requirement, you can choose to apply for this pre-sessional course.
