Undergraduate Support

We have excellent computing facilities for you to use at Newcastle, and we provide support to help you use them.

What computing facilities are there?

  • Well over a thousand PCs in a number of clusters across campus (and in Henderson Hall and Castle Leazes halls of residence), plus several hundred computers owned by academic subject areas
  • access to word processing, statistical and database packages, the Internet, email, central filestore, mail and print services
  • a Unix service with several powerful central systems, and clusters of workstations
  • an extensive range of software, for teaching, research and personal development
  • a campus network that reaches all corners of the University
  • excellent connections to the Internet (we are one of the primary sites for the academic SuperJANET network)

When can I use the computers?

Cluster rooms are open to all members of the University each weekday, with some cluster rooms also open late (some even all night) and at weekends.

What help do you offer?

Will I have email and internet access?

Every student has a personal University email address, and the use of a web-based email service which allows access from anywhere in the world.

You also have free access to the Internet, and can publish your own web pages.
