Campus Managed Desktop Hardware requirements

Before purchasing any hardware it is essential that you refer to the Procurement web pages relating to recommended computer systems to ensure that you are buying supported equipment that is covered by the University Framework Agreement.

ISS will not support any equipment which is purchased outside of this agreement. Be aware also that we do not support all models from recommended suppliers so check carefully that you are buying suitable equipment.

In order to be a fully supported Managed Desktop, PCs must meet certain hardware requirements.  Below is guidance for supported machines under various scenarios:

Recommended Specification for New and Existing PCs

Any new machines should be purchased in line with the specification on the Green Computing Page of the Procurement website as per the University Framework Agreement.  ISS has worked closely with University Procurement to develop a greener PC specification to meet the current needs of the University and as such endorses the recommendations outlined on these pages.

Minimum Specification for Existing PCs

The minimum supported specification for machines being built on Campus is:

  • 2GHz Processor
  • 2Gb RAM
  • 80GB Hard Disk

This specification is deemed to be sufficient for the remainder of the life of most Windows 7 machines.

Operating Systems

Wherever possible, ISS encourages the use of Windows 7 in preference to Windows XP on new machines.
