Installing the Campus Managed Desktop - essential things you should know

  • Campus Desktop PCs are built over the campus network from ISS servers using RIS (Remote Installation Service) or WDS (Windows Deployment Services, the new version of RIS) - the Campus Desktops cannot be installed from a CD.
  • To install a Campus Desktop using RIS or WDS involves overwriting the existing system partition. The useful contents of the PC should be backed up before doing this, e.g. data files, PST files, etc.
  • Common and Managed Desktops are managed within the Active Directory. If you would like to know more about Active Directory, see the following from Microsoft: http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServer/en/library/6f8a7c80-45fc-4916-80d9-16e6d46241f91033.mspx?mfr=true.
  • Campus Desktops can be very lightweight in terms of installation. A minimal installation of just the operating system and virus checking software is possible. Combined with RAS, this can give a very low maintenance, highly functional machine.
