Training and Support for Organisational Unit Administrators

Initial OU Administration - training session

The Infrastructure Systems team provides initial training and support to OU Administrators. New OU Administrators are invited to come for a half-day session at Claremont Tower in order to learn the basics for managing their departmental OU. The team is happy to assist with first RIS/WDS builds, and to help resolve any teething problems which might occur when building Campus Desktops.

If you would like to arrange a training session please email us via it.servicedesk@ncl.ac.uk to organise a mutually convenient date and time. Once the session is arranged you will need the following:

  • Windows Campus user id (n-id) and password from ISS Reception. You must go in person to collect this.
  • A password in readiness for setting up your supervisor id (s-id) - this will be done at the training session.
  • It would also be useful to have an idea of how many PCs you have in your School, and what software requirements these machines may have. This will help in the planning of the Organisational Unit structure.

Software Packaging - creating MSIs

The best resource for advice and training for staff wanting to package up software into MSIs and create group policies is the campus-support mailing list - see below.

Campus Support

OU Administrators get automatic subscription to the campus-support mailbase. As well as being the main means by which ISS keep OU Administrators up to date about changes to IT resources within the Campus Domain, the list provides an excellent source of shared knowledge and support.

Workshops

Workshops covering common Active Directory tasks have been held in recent years. In order to plan such training in the future it would be useful if people could email it.servicedesk@ncl.ac.uk and let us know which aspects of OU management they would like us to cover.

Possible future topics include:-

  • OU admin basics - refresher
  • Server Management - File servers, SQL, IIS
  • Advanced sessions in creating MSI packages

Please feel free to suggest other areas for discussion at a workshop.

Also, what kind of format should these workshops take, and would experienced School OU administrators be interested in helping to deliver some of the workshops?

Self Help

There are a number of How Tos which cover many common OU admin tasks.
