Mailstore Quotas

Outlook Exchange: Undergraduate and PostGraduate (Taught) students ("UG/PGT")

Exchange mailstore 120 MB - 150 MB - 200 MB [see the footnote for details]

This is a fixed allocation and may not be increased. If you find you are running out of space, see our advice on managing your mailstore.

The size of attachments (incoming or outgoing) is restricted: in June 2008 the limit was raised from 20MB to 50MB.

Outlook Exchange: Staff, and PostGraduate Research students ("Staff/PGR")

Exchange mailstore: 500 MB - 600 MB - 1 GB [see the footnote for details, and our advice on managing your mailstore]

Staff/PGR have the option of using the Unix mail service (Cyrus) instead of Exchange: see below.

In exceptional circumstances staff can make a case for a larger than normal allocation of mailstore. (In general, staff are at the University for a longer period than students, and some have significant extra academic commitments which justify larger allocations.)

The size of attachments (incoming or outgoing) is restricted: in June 2008 the limit was raised from 20MB to 50MB.

For more details, and good advice, about using Exchange, see ISS's Outlook Exchange web pages.

Unix mailstore

The Unix (Cyrus - IMAP/POP) service is used by a minority of users who have consulted ISS Registration or the University Postmaster. Please note: the Cyrus service is no longer available to new users.

All users: 500 MB.

July 2008

Footnote

The Exchange quota system provides three limits. The three values mentioned (i.e. 120-150-200 and 500-600-1GB) mean:

  • first limit exceeded: a warning is given;
  • second limit exceeded: no further messages may be sent;
  • top limit: no further messages may be received, i.e. all email is stopped (see our advice on managing your mailstore).
