Webfolders Service
ISS Web Folders service
This service is designed to give University users secure access to files and folders on their Home Folder using a web browser, from anywhere. You can connect from Winows, Macintosh and Linux machines:
Windows
Internet Explorer is the recommended browser, running in Web Folder mode as this gives the more familiar My Computer or Windows Explorer view. (Apple Macintosh and Linux users please see below).
Finding your Home Folder / Webfolders path
- Open the Newcastle university home page: http://www.ncl.ac.uk
- Click People search.
- Click My Details.
- If prompted, authenticate using your campus ID and password.
- Click the link for “ISS technical information, including details of which ISS servers you use and any role accounts you own.”
- Take note of the “Home folder via Webfolders:” path.
- Clicking your Webfolders link will give you read only access to your home folder through a web browser.
Windows 7 \ Vista \ XP (Full access)
- Click the start button then right click on Computer.
- Select Map Network Drive.
- Depending upon your Operating system:
- Windows7 / Vista: click "Connect to a Web site that you use to store documents and pictures"
- Windows XP: click "Sign up for online storage or connect to a network server"
- Click Next.
- Click Next to "Choose a custom network location".
- Enter your webfolders URL; e.g. https://webfolders.ncl.ac.uk/home/homeXX
- Click Next.
- If prompted, authenticate using your campus ID and password.
- Enter a description for your network location.
- Click Finish.
Apple Macintosh
With the release of Mac OS X v10.4 "Tiger" Apple introduced the ability to connect to shares via Webfolders. This feature allows Apple users to access their campus filestore directly from the Finder in an easy way.
As an example the fictitious user nabcd whose H: drive is on tower6 home32 would need to
- Select "Connect To Server..." from the Finder's "Go" menu.
- In the address field enter https://webfolders.ncl.ac.uk/home/home32/nabcd
- Enter nabcd for name & your campus Windows password.
Tip : Don't work directly off the mounted share, use it to copy files to and from your Mac only.
Mobile Devices
Depending on the device you use it may be possible to connect to the webfolders service from your smartphone. ITBytes have published a guide on doing this from an Andorid phone.
