Evolution Mail Client

Evolution is an e-mail client capable of accessing a number of different types of e-mail server including the campus POP, IMAP, SMTP and Exchange servers. Some staff will still be using the POP/IMAP/SMTP servers, most staff and all students will be using the Exchange servers. All account details are set in the Evolution Preferences window.

POP Server

Everyone should have moved from the old POP server on burnmoor to using cyrus. This server uses POPS to copy your e-mail over a secure connection.

IMAP Server

The new mail server cyrus is also the IMAP server and uses IMAPS to copy your e-mail over a secure connection.

SMTP Server

You should use smtpauth to send e-mail over a secure connection using SMTPS. Both cyrus and smtpauth can also be used over the Docking Service and from off campus.

Exchange Server

Evolution uses the Outlook Web Access interface to access your e-mail so it can be slow. If you have thousands of e-mails on the Exchange server it can be painfully slow. I recommend you filter your incoming e-mail into local folders as you would with a POP server.

While editing the account details, under the Receiving Options tab, set the Global Catalogue server name to ldap.ncl.ac.uk, this allows you to search for contacts in the Global Address List as stored by the Active Directory. It is worth limiting the number of responses to speed up the query and force you to perform a more specific search.
