Hub's & Switches For Personal Use

There are some situations where it can be beneficial to have a small network switch to extend the local network. Any hub or unmanaged switch is allowed on the network but you can NOT use managed switches or routers. These devices often provide network services such as DHCP or NAT which can prevent other computers on the local network from working properly. Any devices found to be providing such services will be removed from the network. Here are some recommended network switches and under what circumstances they can be used.

Students in Halls of Residence - may have more than one computer and can use a small hub or switch to connect to a single point in their bedroom. Suggested network switches include,

Each computer connected to the switch in Halls will be assigned a network address automatically.

Users at home (i.e. connected via an ISP and NOT connected to a University provided connection point) - with multiple machines should consider a small router that supports NAT and VPN (PPTP) pass through so they can connect to the campus VPN service. Suggested network routers include,

NOTE: You are not allowed to use these devices on campus as they often provide DHCP services and issue other users with incorrect addresses.

Special cases - there may be machines such as medical scanners or engineering equipment that needs to be on the network, firewalled off from the rest of campus, but accessible from an off campus site. In such cases you can use a firewall such as,
