Windows 98/Windows ME VPN connection

If you are running Windows 98 SE (Second Edition) or Windows ME just follow the instructions below, but if you are running the original Windows 98 you will need to upgrade Dial-Up Networking. These instructions are for dial-up users.

  1. Click Start
  2. Select Settings
  3. Select Control Panel
  4. Double click Add/Remove Programs
  5. Click Windows Setup tab
  6. Click Communications
  7. Click Details
  8. Select Virtual Private Networking from the scroll list
  9. Click OK and you will be returned to the Add/Remove Programs Properties window
  10. Click OK and the files will be installed

Restart the computer when asked. After restarting,

  1. Double click My Computer
  2. Double click Dial-Up Networking
  3. Double click on the Make A New Connection icon
  4. Under Type a name for the computer you are dialing enter Newcastle VPN
  5. In the Select a device pull-down choose Microsoft VPN Adapter
  6. Click Next
  7. In the Host name or IP Address window enter ivpn.ncl.ac.uk (internal) if you are connecting from wireless or a docking point, otherwise enter evpn.ncl.ac.uk (external) if you connecting from off campus
  8. Click Next
  9. Click Finish after the message that the configuration was successful
  10. Right click on the new icon for the VPN server in the Dial-Up Networking window, and select Properties
  11. Click on the Server Types tab
  12. Under Advanced options
    deselect       "Log on to network"
    select         "Enable software compression"
    deselect       "Require encrypted password"
    deselect       "Require data encryption"
    
  13. Under Allowed network protocols check TCP/IP
    deselect       "NetBEUI"
    deselect       "IPX/SPX Compatible"
    select         "TCP/IP"
    
  14. Click on TCP/IP Settings
    select         "Server assigned IP address"
    select         "Server assigned name server addresses"
    select         "Use IP header compression"
    
    If this is an external connection then you should also
    deselect       "Use default gateway on remote network"
    as you should use your ISP as your default gateway. If you are on campus leave this option selected.
  15. Click OK
  16. Click OK to return to Dial-Up Networking

You need only do the above once. To use the VPN service,

  1. Connect to the Internet as you normally would
  2. Go to My Computer, Dial-up Networking, and double click the Newcastle VPN icon
  3. Enter your Windows 2000 username and password
  4. Click the Connect button. You will see a Connection Established window after a successful connection

Now all your Newcastle traffic will go via the VPN connection, and appear to come from the campus network.

Upgrading Windows 98 Dial-up Networking

  1. With Internet Explorer go http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q285189
  2. Scroll down until you can click Download DUN 1.4 for Windows 98 (Dun14-98.exe) now
  3. Select Save this program to disk
  4. Click OK
  5. Select Save in: Desktop
  6. Click Save and wait for the file to download
  7. Close any open windows until you can double click the icon dun14-98 on your Desktop
  8. Click Yes to Do you wish to continue?
  9. Click Yes to accept
  10. Click Yes to restart your computer
