"Getting Connected"

The University's campus network provides all the University's internal services, and also connects to the UK Joint Academic Network (JANET), thence to the Internet.

There are two types of connection to the campus network:

  • Fixed connections, which comprise:
    • University equipment in clusters, lecture theatres, etc., managed by ISS.
    • Computers for staff and PhD students who work in offices. These are usually set up by the local School Computing Officer.
  • Temporary connections providing a service for students or staff who wish to connect their own (private) computer to the network. This is done by using the Docking Service, which comprises the campus wireless network, docking stations on campus, and network points in rooms in Halls (currently over 4000 rooms).
