In accordance with the university iPad purchasing policy, authorised purchases of data enabled iPad's will be provided from Orange.
Each iPad will be enabled for data roaming (i.e. able to send/recieve data on foreign mobile networks).

It is very difficult to know just how much data you will consume.
Browsing to www.bbc.co.uk will consume >2MB's of data, and outside Europe will cost £11 to display 1 web page.
1MB = 100 short emails without attachments OR 10 emails with a 100KB attachment
Skype voice calling streams data at 64Kbit's per second, so a short voice conversation can quickly consume a lot of data.
Please be aware that data can be consumed even when your not using an app. This is due to "Network Overhead" which is data received/transmitted to control the network. This is also consumed from the data bundle. Similarly, data may be consumed by running apps. you are not aware of.
You can help to reduce your data usage bill by adding a "bundle" of data to your account, before you leave the UK:

Telecoms are unaware of your travel plans and needs, so it is up to you to select the bundle you wish to add and to contact telecoms to have the bundle added to your iPad plan. Orange require at least 24 hours to add a bundle, so please forward your request to the telecoms office with enough time to action your request.
