Set up your mobile

We are currently creating some powerpoint presentations which describe how to set up and use your Android Based handset. Please check back at a later date.

In the meantime please contact Phil Parker, Telecoms Officer, on extension 8999 for assistance, guidance and advice.

Some Basic configuration steps:

Set-up WiFi:

Menu -> Settings -> Wireless and Networks -> WiFi Settings:

Turn on WiFi

Select "newcastle-university" SSID in the list of "WiFi Networks"

You will see "Enter password for credential storage"

Enter a password (you could use the same password used to log into your Windows based PC account), you will be asked to repeat this password

You will then see the Connect to .... page, Select "Identity" and enter your "nXX" login ID, scroll down to "Wireless Password" and enter your Windows based PC account password, click "Connect"

The WiFi SSID and password are both stored into the 'Credential Storage' so you don't have to keep entering the password. When the handset sees the "newcastle-university" SSID, it will automatically connect you.

Credential Storage

Think of credential storage as a "bank" inside your phone, which keeps a note of your accounts and passwords. The password you set above is like the Master Key which opens the storage area and allows the phone to access the details held within. (When you power off the phone and power back on and try to access WiFi, you will be asked to enter credential storage password. Once you enter the password, the storage area is opened and your phone can access the account/password information)

Email/Calendar/Contacts Syncronisation

Under All Apps, Select "Mail by HTC". This email client software is free to use. The Orange provided "Mail" app is free for only 30 days and you will be charged to use it after this time. Other email clients can be found on the Android Market place.

Select Exchange Activesync

Under 'Email Address' enter your "X.X@ncl.ac.uk" email address

Under 'Server Address' enter "owa.ncl.ac.uk"

Under 'Domain' enter "campus"

Under 'Under Username' enter your "nXX" login ID

Under 'Password' enter your Windows based PC account password

Click 'Next'

The next screen will allow you to select what content you want to be syncronised and the fequency. We reccomend ticking 'Mail', 'Contacts' and 'Calendar', and selecting '15 mins' which means the handset will wait for 15 mins before checking for new mail. Click 'Finish'. The handset will contact the mail servers at the university and sync mail from your Inbox, your Contacts and your Calendar.

Every 15 mins the handset will check for mail, in addition, when you open the "Mail by HTC" app, the handset will automatically sync.

Using the On-Screen Keyboard

When you encounter a Text Box, the on-screen keyboard appears. You can minimise the keyboard using the very bottom left button. Selecting a text box will automatically open the keyboard again.

To increase typing accuracy, run the calibration tool.

Menu -> Settings -> Language & Keyboard -> Touch Input -> Text Input -> "Calibration Tool"

Run the tool and, holding the phone as you would do naturally, type the sentence displayed on screen. The handset will calibrate its self to how *You* type and will give you far greater accuracy.
