The basic principle is that the list must have some relevance to the life of the university, either academic, administrative or cultural. Lists may include external members where the list as a whole meets this criterion. The original owner must be a member of the university and one of the listowner addresses must be a newcastle.ac.uk address, and if lists contain large numbers of external members, at least one of the main activists must be a member.
These are widely used for internal communication within departments. Many use superlists.
Examples: iss-all (all ISS staff, superlist), iss-techs (ISS technicians, sublist).
These are used for groups by entry year, or those doing a particular course. These can also use superlists.
Examples: bds (Dental undergraduates), bds06 (Dental 2006 intake)
Examples: judo-club, swim-polo
Examples: afro-caribbean, chinese-students
Examples: java-link, merc-forum, syllabus-plus-users
Examples: dbinfo, pc-support
Examples: alum-news, dialup-announce, lib-chem
For these, the 'list' has a small number of owners/members who deal with enquiries or reports from internal or external people.
Examples: accommodation-enquiries, telecomms
