University email
The student email service is Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA).
The web address for OWA is https://owa.ncl.ac.uk
Logging in
Just type your University Login Name, and use your Windows password.
Always log off OWA (top right-hand corner of OWA's window) so that your email is kept secure.
Why you need to use University email
You must use this email account "@ncl.ac.uk". The reasons are:
- It's the one that the University will use for official email.
- We know that it is secure, reliable and traceable (which are important factors in cases of academic dispute).
- Your University email address identifies you as a member of the University.
- Address look-up – you can easily find a person's ncl.ac.uk email address in the University online directory. Staff and fellow students will use this to contact you.
"Spam" and malicious hoaxes
Comprehensive anti-spam and anti-virus measures are in place at the University.
You are strongly advised to read about email hoaxes, which present a real threat to the security of your own affairs.
"newcastle" or "ncl"?
You can use "@ncl.ac.uk" instead of "@newcastle.ac.uk" in all circumstances except one: if you are signing up to a website or a service which uses your email address for authentication, use the full form "@newcastle.ac.uk".
