There are several different methods of connecting to the campus network.
University owned computers can be connected directly to the campus network but must be kept updated with the latest security patches. Directly connected computers must be registered by your schools computing officer and since they don't need authentication must be located in a secure area. The recommended configuration is as a Campus Managed Desktop machine.
Students can plug their computer into docking points which are available in most rooms at halls of residence and a few places on campus. The service uses a VPN to provide a secure connection and authenticate the user.
Users can connect from off-campus by using the External VPN. Users can also use WoL and Remote Desktop to access a campus desktop computer from home. There are other services such as RAS or webfolders that can be used off-campus to access your files.
The Campus Wireless Service is available to all staff and students across campus and in some halls of residence. The service uses the SSID newcastle-university with Wireless Protected Access (WPA) and Enterprise level encryption (EAP).
EduRoam is the wireless roaming service used by the international research and education community. It is available across campus to visiting academics. The service uses the SSID eduroam with Wireless Protected Access (WPA) and Enterprise level encryption (EAP).
The Guest Wireless Service provides Internet access to short-term visitors and delegates to University-hosted conferences who want to use their own computer to connect the internet. The service is provided free of charge, is simple to use and requires no configuration changes to the visitor’s computer. It does not provide access to University PCs or services.
