Connection Methods

There are several different methods of connecting to the campus network.

Wired Connections

Staff Network Connection

University-owned computers can be connected directly to the campus network but must be kept updated with the latest security patches. Directly connected computers must be registered by the IT Service and since they don't need authentication must be located in a secure area. The recommended configuration is as a Campus Managed Desktop machine.

Student Network Access

‌If you're staying in University-owned halls, we recommend you connect via the network point in your room. You can connect your own computer, game console, smart TV and other devices, so you can connect to the Internet through the campus wired network. Devices must be registered via the captive portal OR the registration page.

Connect from Off-Campus

Users can connect from off-campus by using WoL and Remote Desktop to access a campus desktop computer from home. There are also other services such as Filr or webfolders that can be used off-campus to access your files.

Wireless Connections

Campus Wireless Service

The Campus Wireless Service is available to all staff and students across campus and in some halls of residence. The service uses the SSID newcastle-university with Wireless Protected Access (WPA2) and Enterprise level encryption (EAP).

eduroam Wireless Service

eduroam is the wireless roaming service used by the international research and education community. It is available across campus to visiting academics. The service uses the SSID eduroam with Wireless Protected Access (WPA2) and Enterprise level encryption (EAP).

Wireless Guest Service

Visitors who are not able to connect to eduroam can use the free cloud WiFi network WiFi Guest to access the Internet using their own computer. The service is provided free of charge, is simple to use and requires no configuration changes to your computer. The service is provided for visitors to University Open Days and Events and not recommended for permanent use. It does not provide access to University PCs or services.

The service is provided by The Cloud Networks Ltd and is the same free public WiFi service available in thousands of locations across the UK. You will need to create an account to use the service, unless you already have an account for The Cloud.
