Staff can connect directly to the to the campus network and to the campus wireless service. They can also connect from off campus by several different methods.

If your computer is in a fixed secure location, such as a staff office, secure lab or workshop, you can have a network address that will remain the same while at that location. You may also have a public address if required, so the computer will be visible on the Internet (see your local computing officer). All directly connected computers must be registered by your local computing officer, it is recommended that staff computers use the campus managed desktop so they can be updated and maintained automatically by ISS.
Follow the instructions in the Staff Network Connection section to setup your computer.

The Newcastle University wireless service is available across campus.
Windows PC users should download and run the Campus Network Setup program.
If installation fails, or you are using Mac OS X or Linux, try following instructions on the Campus Wireless Service page to set up your computer manually.
Staff may also use a Docking Network Connection at one of the wired docking points situated around campus.
University services can also be accessed off-campus using the external VPN. University services can also be accessed using RAS or webfolders. You can also use the Wake Up service to switch on a remote machine before accessing it.
To help maintain the security and integrity of the campus network users should use the campus managed desktop so their computers can be updated and maintained automatically by ISS. If you prefer to maintain your computer yourself you need to use updated anti-virus software and take some common sense security precautions when online. We recommend the use of Forefront AV/Microsoft Security Essentials which can be downloaded directly from the Microsoft web site. AV definitions can be downloaded from here for installation on non-networked machines.
You should consult with your local computing officer about any computer you want to connect to the network. You can connect computers and other devices to the network points in your office, lab or workshop. If you have more than one computer you can connect them all using a small network switch but there should be enough network points available for all machines.
Wireless routers are not permitted on the campus network. If there is no wireless coverage in your area please report the location to the Service Desk and we will look into providing wireless if appropriate.
For more information see the Home Routers & Switches section.
Your network point will be disabled if you run any service that disrupts other users, and won't be restored until the problem is resolved. If you have been using a device running a DHCP server and suspect you have been blocked, you will need to contact the Service Desk on 0191 2225999 with your room details (full location and room number), your network outlet number (if identified) and your contact details. Please include a telephone number and alternative email address if you have one.
When using any campus networking resources you are subject to the Computer User's Agreement and the Rules of Use for computing facilities. In particular bear in mind the rule about not disturbing other users. Docking users sometimes make voice/video connections: this must not disturb other users, or in any way affect their use of ISS facilities.
