System Speed Dial List

Calls to 0843/0844 and 0871 numbers are barred from being directly dialled. 0843/0844 and 0871 numbers can be charged at up to premium rate. Regulations state that the provider should advise the caller of the rate at which their call is charged. It would not be possible to police all 0843/0844/0871 numbers, so they are barred from being directly dialled. The university recognises that calls to these numbers for university business are legitimate. The system speed dial list allows you to call 0843/0844/0871 numbers without having to seek authorisation to change your class of service from your "bill payer". You must pre-register the number on the list before it can be used.

To add a number to the list, please email your request to telecoms@ncl.ac.uk. Include the number and the name of the organisation, and how this number is required for university business. The system speed dial list is available from all university extensions.

The list(s) are available to download as an Excel spreadsheet (do not save a local copy to your computer, as it changes almost daily, we suggest bookmarking this page).

To call an entry on the list, dial *61 followed by the 3 digit index code. e.g. *61 001 will call the number registered to index 001.

Note on international calls: Due to contractual obligations with our carriers, we are unable to add any 0844 etc. access number for "dial thru" services to the system speed dialling list. (These include calling card access numbers).

Class of service changes

If you feel that your role requires you to have 0843/0844 and 0871 access, please ask your bill payer to authorise a class of service increase to allow your extension to directly dial these numbers.

The bill payer must email telecoms@ncl.ac.uk with their authorisation to increase your class of service. This will confirm that they accept any potential increase in call charges, which are possible from dialling these numbers.
