Access - Register New HPC Project

All Rocket users need to be a member of at least one project.  Projects are an essential part of how Rocket is run:

  • As a project owner, you can add and remove members yourself.   This controls who has an account on Rocket.
  • The project will be given a directory on the shared filestore (/nobackup) in which to store shared files for their group.
  • A unix group will be set up, with all project members included.  This allows you to share files within the project.
  • If the project has contributed financially to Rocket, the rewards will be shared among all project members.

Rocket projects do not need to be funded to qualify for registration.

If you would like to access the Rocket HPC system for your research, use the form below to register your project.  Project PIs and secondary contacts are automatically added when a project is registered.

Note that the project PI must be a permanent member of staff.

To register a new project or account on the HPC facility, please submit a service request to NUService with the following details:

  • The name of the research project or activity
  • The name of the Project PI/Supervisor or primary contact
  • The name of a secondary supervisor or other secondary contact
  • The list of the software packages or tools you will be using
  • The categories of compute/processing you will be undertaking of the software packages or tools you will be using
  • An approximate date you expect the work to run to

For example:

  • Project title: Novel Materials Analysis
  • Primary contact: Professor James Smith
  • Secondary contact: Dr Susan Brown
  • Software used: Python, Ansys, custom C-based materials analysis pipeline
  • Type of activity: Computational Fluid Dynamics and materials modelling
  • Project length: January 2027 to June 2030

We can also add projects for teaching-related activity. In those cases, please let us know the module or programme code the activity relates to (e.g. in the case of a practical student project) and the module lead or project supervisor.
The module lead or project supervisor will be given the ability to register additional students on the project to access HPC resources, just as with a regular research project.

You can access NUService at https://nuservice.ncl.ac.uk - please ensure that your request is categorised as "HPC Request Access" or "HPC Project Registration" in order to avoid any delays.
