Videoconferencing allows people to communicate and collaborate across multiple locations and in real time;  it can be used for many purposes including meetings, teaching, research and interviews.  Using videoconferencing helps reduce travel expenses, saves time and reduces the institutions' carbon footprint.

There are three main types of videoconferencing solutions available:-

  1. Hardware videoconferencing via dedicated managed videoconferencing suites provide a reliable and high quality experience and are generally the preferred option for formal and high-stakes meetings
  2. Software (or desktop) videoconferencing using software such as Lync, Skype and Adobe Connect provides flexible videoconferencing solutions using domestic equipment and internet technology
  3. Teleconferencing is a reliable, easy to use alternative where video is not required or there are potential bandwidth concerns
