Software videoconferencing

WHAT IS IT?

Software video conferencing (also known as web or desktop videoconferencing) can be delivered utilising software and a webcam/headset via a desktop computer or mobile device. Instead of requiring a fully equipped and dedicated hardware videoconferencing suite this can a useful useful and flexible alternative which can be used from your office computer at your desk!

Software videoconferencing solutions available on campus include Microsoft LyncSkype and Adobe Connect.

WHEN SHOULD IT BE USED?

Software videoconferencing achieves best results when used on a one-to-one basis and with a headset.  As it can be utilised from your office PC software videoconferencing can be extremely convenient and will satisfy a range of requests.

Please be aware that there can, on occassion, be some potential issues associated with using it.  Therefore, if your meeting is business critical and/or has multiple participants, we would strongly recommed using a managed hardware videoconferencing suite as remote participants can still connect to us using desktop systems.

Please see our videoconferencing options page to see which solution best meets your needs.
