Staff personal web sites (www.staff.ncl.ac.uk) are provided as an informal publishing platform for members of University staff. This platform is not provided as a business critical service, and as such, should not be used for the hosting of teaching materials as their availability cannot be guaranteed at an appropriately high level. Staff websites will be published at: www.staff.ncl.ac.uk/email.address/
All staff, students and societies at the University can publish their own web site. Personal web publishing is primarily intended as a 'hosting only' service, although support and advice will be provided to personal publishers via the IT Service Desk (it.servicedesk@ncl.ac.uk) where possible. Student websites will be published at: www.student.ncl.ac.uk/email.address/ Society websites will be published at www.societies.ncl.ac.uk/societyname
For staff/student personal websites, you just need to have this added to the UNIX services. Please contact the IT Service Desk to set this up prior to completing the form, below.
Societies require a non personal username and associated email address. The appropriate forms are available from the IT Service Desk .
Department-sponsored societies must have their registration form countersigned by the head of the sponsoring department.
Societies affiliated to the Students' Union must have their registration form countersigned by both the IT Co-ordinator and the Sabbatical Officer
The Unix account must be renewed annually. If it is not renewed, then the username will expire and the web pages will become inaccessible. To renew your account, contact the IT Service Desk.
Note that it takes around 24 hours before your Unix account becomes active and may take longer at the beginning of the academic year.
When you register we will:
Create your personal URL. This will be of the form http://www.staff.ncl.ac.uk/your.name (where your.name is the first part of your University email address).
Create a directory (folder) called public_html in your Unix file space to hold your web pages. If you already have this directory, it will remain unchanged.
Set the correct permissions on both your home and public_html directories.
Add your email address to the www-announce mailing list. This is very low-traffic (a few messages per year) and is used by the Web Services team to announce changes to and important developments in the University's Web services.
Please complete the form below. Registration should normally take place within three working days (it is usually less) and you will receive a confirmation by email.
The Secure File Transfer Client should be used to upload files. When completing your connection details, the host name to use is personalpublishing.ncl.ac.uk.
If you would like your site to be listed in and linked from the directory of staff sites at http://www.(staff/students/societies).ncl.ac.uk/ then you can request this by emailing it.servicedesk@ncl.ac.uk. Your site will not be indexed by the University search engine until you do.
All content hosted on the University web servers must adhere to the guidelines and rules of use.
