Teachers/tutors who would like to become members of the Library should read
the following section to see if they fit any of the categories of membership.
If you just wish to bring your pupils on a visit to the Library you should
read the section on Children in the Library.
If you are registered on a part-time course at Newcastle University you will
be eligible to use the library and have consultation and borrowing facilities
without charge. Students are usually issued with their smartcard on registration
and this is valid for the length of their course.
We recognise that if you are a teacher or a tutor who is also a part-time
student you may have particular constraints on your time and access to the
University Library. A web
page for part-time students is available and this indicates some of the
services we offer that may help you to meet your study and research requirements.
If you are a postgraduate, part-time or distance learning student at another
university in the UK you may have reference and borrowing facilities without
charge under the SCONUL Access Scheme.
Most universities are members of the scheme, including Northumbria, Sunderland,
Durham and Teesside. For more details of this scheme please contact your own
University Library, or visit the SCONUL website: http://www.sconul.ac.uk/users_info.
If you are a registered student at Northumbria, Durham, Sunderland and Teesside
Universities, following an undergraduate course, you may use the Library but
you may have consultation only facilities without charge. A current University
campus or library card from your own institution must be produced.
Graduates of Newcastle University and King's College Durham are invited to
become personal members of the Library for an annual fee of £20.00.
This includes borrowing facilities in all three libraries, access to Special
Collections and use of some databases. Please bring with you a copy of your
graduation certificate or a letter from the Alumni Relations Officer (tel
0191-222-7250 or e-mail alumni-office@ncl.ac.uk)
and the fee of £20.00 to the Robinson or Walton Libraries.
If your School belongs to the University's Partners Programme,
you can use the Library and have consultation and borrowing facilities without
charge. Please bring with you a letter from your School, confirming that you
are a Partners Teacher. Your School Office will be able to supply this letter.
You will then be given a Smartcard (valid for one year and renewable on production
of another letter from your School) and will be able to borrow up to 8 books
and use some electronic databases.
If none of the above criteria applies to you, but you wish to become a member
of the library, you may apply to join by writing to the Head of Customer Services,
or calling into the library in person to collect a form.
Current fees for external personal users are as follows:
Borrowing - 12 months £50.00
Borrowing - 6 month £30.00
Consultation - There is no charge for consultation facilities
(Join for a period of 6 months or a year).
Alternatively your school or college may wish to apply for corporate membership
of the library. The current fee for corporate membership is £250 + VAT.
With corporate membership your school would have one Library card with one
set of borrowing rights (i.e.15 items can be borrowed on this card) which
can be shared amongst staff.
