Rules Concerning Admission to the Library and Fees

  1. The following are eligible to use the Library:
    1. University Members. The following University Members may have consultation and borrowing facilities without charge:
      1. members of Council
      2. members of academic and related staff
      3. members of staff, other than academic and related staff, who are recommended in each case by their Head of School
      4. registered students of the University.
    2. Former Members of the University. Graduates and diplomats of the University and of Kings College Durham may have consultation and borrowing facilities using the Library's own stock on payment of an annual fee.
    3. Members of Other UK Higher Education Institutions
      1. Members of Universities that have joined the SCONUL Access Scheme. Members of academic staff, research postgraduates, other part-time, distance and placement students may have consultation and borrowing facilities in accordance with the scheme and restricted to the use of the Library's own stock without charge. Other students may have consultation facilities only without charge, on production of a current university campus or library identity card from their university.
      2. Other UK Higher Education Institutions that are not members of SCONUL Access Scheme. Staff and students of other UK Higher Education Institutions may have consultation facilities during term and vacation without charge, on production of proof of status.
    4. Members of the public may apply for borrowing facilities restricted to the Library's own stock and on payment of the current fee if applicable. Members of the public may also apply for consultation facilities. There is no charge for this activity.
    5. The Librarian has discretion to grant borrowing and/or consultation rights to:
      1. members of organisations which are affiliated, or which have a special relationship, with the University.
      2. registered students (including part-time and distance learning students) of other institutions of higher education for regular use; and to determine the appropriate fee.
      3. helpers for disabled users or for mature students who have difficulty in making use of library services.
      4. individuals, institutions, groups or conferences wishing to use the Library for short periods or for specified purposes; and to determine the appropriate fee and/or ask for a School of the University to act as guarantor.
    6. The Librarian has discretion to grant borrowing and/or consultation rights for limited periods without fee. In exercising this discretion the Librarian will take into account the level of existing demand on the Library and its ability to maintain the level of service available to its normal users.
    7. Learners using an Inspire passport or referral letter. Inspire learners will have consultation access to the University Library.
  2. All registered members admitted to the use of the Library are required to sign an undertaking to abide by the Regulations and Rules of the Library. An approved University Smartcard card must be brought to the Library on each visit and must be produced to enter a Library building, when books are borrowed and at any other time at the request of Library staff
