Study rooms and study spaces

There are different types of study environments depending on the type of work you want to do.

Robinson Library

Silent study

Levels 3 and 4 are designated silent areas.

Too noisy to study? The Robinson Library Noise Alert Service covers the silent floors. Text number: 07891 484 764 (term-time only).

Individual and two person study rooms (quiet study)

These are available on Level 3 and 4 on a first-come-first-served basis.

Group work - bookable study rooms (quiet study)

There are bookable rooms for use by groups of three or more persons on an hourly basis for up to two hours. You can book a room here.

Open Space on Level 2 (near the Service Desk) is also suitable for quiet group work.

Group work - YourSpace

The social learning area on Level 1 - a great place to study in groups. Eating and chat are positively encouraged!

The Learning Lounge

The Learning Lounge is an internet cafe on Level 2 near the main computer cluster. The five computers within the Learning Lounge are Skype enabled, allowing you to talk to other Skype users free of charge. The computers are fitted with webcams and microphone headsets.

Accessible study rooms

There are four rooms for the use of authorised individual students (plus helper if applicable), who have been referred to the library by Student Wellbeing.

Booking is on a two-hourly basis, up to a maximum of two hours per day, and up to two weeks in advance. To book, ask at the Information Desk on Level 4 during desk opening hours or contact us.

Walton Library

Group rooms and group study areas.

There are 12 group rooms available in the Walton Library for Newcastle University students and staff. These vary in size from two to eight people, all have Whiteboards and most have PCs and large screens.

To use a group room, please come to the Enquiry Desk and ask for a key. A key will be issued to your Smartcard for a period of two hours.

Rooms are not for individual use, there is no renewal of use, and the rooms are not bookable.

We also have two group discussion/study areas. There are large tables, PCs and screens here and group discussion is allowed in this area. Ask at Enquiry Desk if you need help finding this area.

There is also a quiet study area and a room designated as silent study.

Accessible study room

An accessible study room is also available which can be booked for two hour periods per day up to four weeks in advance, in person, or by emailing lib-med-accessbookings@ncl.ac.uk or by telephoning 0191 208 8108.

To use the room please bring your Smartcard to the library desk and ask for the key.

The accessible study room has the following extra facilities:

  • Dragon Naturally Speaking voice recognition software
  • JAWS screen reader
  • video magnifier (CCTV)

Law Library

The Law Library offers a quiet and comfortable environment to study in.

Silent study area

International Law, European Law and the English Law Reports rooms are designated silent study areas.

Quiet study

The Law Library as a whole is a quiet study area, including the Eldon and Grey Clusters.

Group work

The Discussion (or Mooting) Room and Foreign Law Reports room may be used for quiet group work.
