Making your research available open access

All staff at Newcastle University are strongly encouraged to make their research available open access via our e-prints service. The process is quick and easy, and library staff will check all items before they are made public, and assist with any queries. Several hundred staff have already deposited their research in our service - why not join them?

You can find out more about what type of resources you can deposit, and how you can do it on the eprints service itself. The Sherpa Romeo site provides a searchable database of publisher and funding body policies with regard to open access publication.

Funders’ policies

Many funding bodies now insist that publications arising from their funding must be made available open access. Find out more here.

Open All

The Open All fund has been established in order to assist researchers with funding their open access publications. Visit the Open All web pages to find out more.

What else can I do?

We would encourage all staff who publish research to look carefully at any contracts they sign with publishers, and be aware of your intellectual property rights. 90% of journals do allow authors to make a copy of their research available open access, but if you're in doubt, do ask. You may be able to modify the terms of your contract if you feel it is too restrictive. Library staff can provide templates or contact publishers on your behalf.

Please remember to keep your own copy of any papers you publish (final, corrected version). Many publishers allow you to deposit your own copy of your article in an institutional repository, but not the publisher's PDF version.
