Wellcome Trust: changes from
1 October 2006
As of 1 October 2006, the Wellcome Trust –
- Expects authors of research papers, where possible, to retain their copyright and to maximise opportunities to make their results available for free.
- Requires electronic copies of any research papers that have been accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal, and are supported in whole or in part by Wellcome Trust funding, to be deposited into UK PubMed Central to be made freely available as soon as possible and in any event within six months of the journal publisher’s official date of final publication. These can be linked with the University’s E-Print Repository.
- Will provide grantholders with additional funding to cover the costs of page processing charges levied by publishers which support the Open Access model. More details about the Wellcome Trust policy and process can be found on their website:
-
Papers may only be submitted to journals which have Wellcome Trust compliant publishing policies. Before you submit a paper, it would be helpful to check the Wellcome Trust's guide Journals frequently used by Wellcome Trust grantholders.
If the journal you propose to publish in does not appear in this list, check the Sherpa Romeo website.
Publishers with a green tick next to Wellcome Trust are deemed to be compliant. Where a journal is not listed the Wellcome Trust advises that authors seek clarification from the journal's editorial staff. - The Wellcome Trust has provided Newcastle University with funds to cover publishers' open access charges. If you are publishing a paper which fulfils the criteria, i.e. based on a specific Wellcome Trust-funded research project and being published by a publisher who offers open access publishing, then these funds can be made available to support the publication charges. Please complete the Publication form, and return this, together with the publisher's sponsored article request form or open access authorisation form, to Jill Taylor-Roe, Head of Liaison and Academic Services, Robinson Library.
- To avoid unnecessary delays in making your article available, please contact us as early as possible - preferably as soon as your article has been accepted and you know what the Open Access publication fee will be. We will provide you with an official PO to include with your open access authorisation form, and will will request that the Open Access invoice be sent directly to the Library.
- Please note that open access funding cannot be used to cover additional page and colour illustration charges.
Trust-funded researchers can, however, use the inflation/flexible funding allowance (FFA), to cover these costs.
This funding has been extended and is currently available. If you have any queries about this initiative, contact Jill Taylor-Roe (Email: Jill.Taylor-Roe@ncl.ac.uk; Tel ext 7652.
