Accessing online resources

From 1st August 2009 a more simplified method of access is in place allowing access to online resources.

On Campus
The majority of resources accessed from the University network on campus do not require a username and password. Simply clicking on the link will grant access. However, in some cases you will need to log into a resource with your Campus ID and password, and depending on the resource this requirement may be described as 'UK Federation log-in', 'institutional log-in' or even 'Shibboleth log-in'. In all of these cases, you should simply find Newcastle University in the drop-down list and then log in with your Campus ID and password when prompted.

Off Campus
There are two main options for off-campus access:

  • RAS - Logging into the RAS service and using the browser icons in the Library Resources folder allows you to access all resources as if you were on campus.
  • Campus ID - As mentioned above, in some cases you will need to log into a resource with your Campus ID and password, and depending on the resource this requirement may be described as 'UK Federation log-in', 'institutional log-in' or even 'Shibboleth log-in'. In all of these cases, you should simply find Newcastle University in the drop-down list and then log in with your Campus ID and password when prompted.
Where possible, please try to use links to resources provided in the Library website, or via the Find-It button. Other links (e.g. old bookmarks, etc.) may not direct you correctly to the resources as they may be outdated.

Athens accounts
Athens usernames and passwords are now no longer used as a method of authentication for resources. Any links that direct you to an Athens log-in screen should be reported to elibrary@ncl.ac.uk. Any other problems you encounter should be directed to the same address.
