Renew

You can renew items which you have on loan, provided that no other borrower has reserved them, your overdue charges do not exceed £5 and you have not reached your maximum number of renewals.

You can renew items by either:

  • renewing the item yourself through Library Search using My Account
  • telephone your library
  • using a self- issue machine within the library
  • consulting a member of staff at the service desk within the library

Please note, you will not be able to renew via self-issue or Library Search if:

  • you have outstanding overdue charges in excess of £5
  • the book has been requested by another reader
  • your Smartcard has expired
  • you have reached the maximum renewal limit on that item

Maximum number of renewals

There is a limit to the number of times an item can be renewed:

  • staff loans - 6
  • 1 week / all other loans - 9

When this limit is reached you have to bring the item to the library for renewal. You will be reminded of these limits at the renewal stage before you reach the limit.

Renewing books requested by other readers

If an item has been requested by another reader (a hold request) you will not be able to renew it and its due date may have been changed by our system. Please return a requested book as soon as possible to the library from which you borrowed it. Requested books returned after the due date will incur a recall charge plus an additional charge if also overdue. View our charge amounts.

Overdue books

If any of your books are overdue, you will not be able to renew them yourself however we can renew them at the service desk. Overdue items (not invoiced) can be renewed by phone - contact your library.
