Exotic and irrational entertainment
The exhibition for March 1999 was called "Exotic and Irrational Entertainment"
Not only Italian opera, but amusements and pastimes of many kinds can appear exotic or irrational, or both, to those who do not take part. A few examples are shown of the works on display which, drawn from the Library's Special Collections, demonstrate the various ways in which previous generations have amused themselves in sport, indoor games, theatre and music.
