In addition to loss of its buildings the College made a contribution to the war effort through the service of the individual students past and present and members of staff who served in H.M. forces during the War. Details of these indivduals can be found in 3 sources:
Armstrong College Principal's Annual Reports - University Archives 3/1/2
The reports for 1915/16-1917/18 contain lists of members of the College who had been killed, wounded, were missing or were prisoners of war. In addition there were lists of those awarded medals, sometimes with a brief citation of the circumstances that led to the award, and those who had been mentioned in dispatches.
Durham University Gazette - University Archives 2/1
There were 2 supplements to the Gazette (12th March 1915 and 25th September 1916) which listed those members of the University serving in H.M. forces. Lists their College, the Unit they were serving in, their rank and if they had been killed or wounded.
