The dispersed material which is associated with C19th collectors John and Thomas Bell includes items relating to Newcastle and the Port of Tyne, the local book trade, and to members of the Bell family.

Brewis Diaries (Contact Special Collections for details)
William Brewis (fl. 1833-1850) farmed at Throphill Farm, Mitford (Northumberland). His diaries include references to the local community, and to local political and social events.

Sid Chaplin Papers (SC - Printed catalogue, Online handlist)
The papers of County Durham-born writer Sid Chaplin (1916-1986). The archive includes both published and unpublished novels, short stories, poetry, plays and articles representing his work for television, theatre and radio. Also included are his diaries, notebooks and correspondence. His roles within the coal industry inform some of his literary works, as well as many articles and letters and the archive also contains items pertaining to his position as Public Relations Officer for the National Coal Board.

Catherine Cookson Papers (CC - Online handlist)
Typescripts, manuscript draft copies and published editions of Catherine Cookson's (1906-1998) work, as well as an interview transcript, recorded interviews and the catalogue from an exhibition which was hosted by the Hatton Gallery in 1999, Catherine Cookson: A Legacy.

Jack Common Papers (JC - Draft catalogue)
Jack Common (1903-1968) was born in Heaton and became a novelist and literary journalist. His papers include typescripts and manuscripts of both published and unpublished works, diaries, notebooks, research notes, cuttings, and correspondence.

Crawhall Collection (Crawhall - Online catalogue, hand-lists)
Joseph Crawhall II (1821-1896) was a local wood-engraver, artist, rope-maker, patron of the arts and humorist. The collection comprises wood blocks, chap-books, personal ephemera and correspondence, particularly letters received from printer Andrew Tuer and from Punch illustrator Charles Keene (whom Crawhall supplied with sketches). Holdings also include an album of watercolour sketches.

Gibson Papers (GG - Online hand-list)
Notebooks, original verses, correspondence and miscellaneous papers, which were written chiefly 1804-1842 by George Gibson, farm steward to Sir Matthew Ridley of Blagdon (Northumberland). Of potential interest to researchers of local and social history.

Heslop Papers (Contact Special Collections for details)
These include the manuscript collections of R. Oliver Heslop for his work on Northumbrian dialects, Northumberland Words (1892-1894).

Barry MacSweeney Papers (BM - Hand list)
The papers of Newcastle poet and journalist Barry MacSweeney (1948-2000) include newspaper articles, photographs, correspondence, publications and draft works for the years 1955-2000.
(His books and journals have been deposited with the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics.)

Miscellaneous Manuscripts (Misc. MSS - Card catalogue, Online hand-list)
The collection of manuscripts includes material concerning printers and booksellers of Newcastle, 1639-1901; deeds, bonds, wills, &c. relating to local people and property; and the coal trade during the 17th-18th centuries. Items also include a list of members enrolled in the Northumberland Militia 1809-1813 with names, ages, dates, trades, and parishes of instalment.

Sharp Papers (Sharp - Online catalogue, Hand-list) Thomas Sharp (1901-1978) was a key figure in town planning in the mid-twentieth century. His work includes plans for Durham and for the Kielder forestry villages. The archive comprises correspondence, material relating to unpublished works, individual plans, commissions, public inquiry documents, press cuttings, autobiographical material and published works. Robert Spence Watson (SWL - Printed catalogue)
The papers of Robert (1837-1911) and Elizabeth (1838-1919) Spence Watson largely comprise letters received by them during their involvement in social, political and educational issues both nationally, and locally around Gateshead-Newcastle.

Trevelyan Papers (WCT, CET, GOT, CPT - Printed catalogues)
Walter Calverley Trevelyan (WCT)
Papers of Walter Calverley Trevelyan (1797-1879) and Lady Pauline (1816-1866) which provide coverage of social and political subjects. Local history is represented and the collection contains some local election ephemera.

Charles Edward Trevelyan (CET)
Although the papers reflect Charles Edward Trevelyan's (1807-1886) involvement in Civil Service reform and his being Assistant Secretary to the Treasury, there is some material relating to local affairs.

George Otto Trevelyan (GOT)
George Otto Trevelyan (1838-1918) was a Liberal M.P. and his papers are mostly concerned with late C19th politics. There is some local election ephemera.

Charles Philips Trevelyan (CPT)
The papers of Charles Philips Trevelyan (1870-1958) deal with early C20th political issues, for the most part, particularly with both the Liberal and Labour parties. The collection contains local election material.

(The Trevelyan family papers were deposited in 1967 and ownership remains with the family.)
