Useful resources include Newcastle's prime local history collection at the Newcastle City Library, and archive material at both Tyne and Wear Archives and the Northumberland County Record Office. The Library of the Literary and Philosophical Society of Newcastle (a subscription library established in 1793) also has a good local history collection. The Archives and Special Collections at the University of Durham has a dedicated local history collection, although relevant items may also be found in their other holdings. The resource centre at Beamish Open Air Museum has an extensive photographic archive which can be viewed, by appointment.
