The current exhibition in the Robinson Library one of many events taking place in the north-east region to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Thomas Bewick and has been partly funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The exhibition seeks to celebrate and illuminate the life of Thomas Bewick, one of the finest artist-craftsmen of the late eighteenth century.

Bewick transformed the age-old technique of engraving on wood into an art form, achieving incredible detail in his depictions of birds and animals and scenes from the natural world.

The exhibition also demonstrates Bewick's exceptional talent as an illustrator and engraver and explores his wider interests in children's books and morality tales.
