Databases

Major database services that the Library provides include Education databases, FirstSearch, LION, Medline, Ovid, ProQuest, Scopus and Web of Knowledge

Databases contain large amounts of data which can be either bibliographical references to articles or the full text. The data is indexed and is searched and displayed by using a computer.
The Library has access to many databases and these are available either over the Database Network or the World Wide Web or on a standalone basis within the Library.
To view the databases select a option from the menu to the left.

A networked database is available to a number of users at one time from any of the Database Network workstations in the Library. Most of them can also be accessed from any other Windows PC attached to the campus network, or from the ISS clusters.
Many databases are now available on the World Wide Web, and can be accessed from any PC connected to the internet.
Standalone databases are available only from one workstation in the Library by one user at one time.

Please note that the use of some databases is restricted to staff and registered students of the University of Newcastle. A list of these restricted databases is available.

Many databases require a username and password for access. Details are given on the individual information page or helpsheet for each database.

General enquires about databases should be directed to your Liaison Librarian.
