Bills

A Bill is a draft version of a proposed Act of Parliament. There are two kinds of Bills - public and private. The latter are not published by the Stationery Office and, since the Library has no collection of Private Bills, all references to Bills in this guide are to Public Bills.
Bills originating in the House of Commons are numbered in the bottom left hand corner of the title page. This number is in square brackets. The Library has Bills from the 1944/45 session onwards and a complete microfiche set from 1801 to 1944/45. They are bound with House of Commons Papers and Command Papers to form Parliamentary Papers. The current session's Bills are unbound and can be traced from the Stationery Office lists. Once the Bills are bound they can be traced through the sessional index to Parliamentary Papers.
