Parliamentary Papers

These consist of House of Commons Papers, Bills and Command Papers. The Library has a complete set from 1944/45 onwards and some earlier numbers, including a complete set from 1801 to 1944/45 on microfiche. An electronic index to Parliamentary Papers from 1801 to date is available on a stand alone PC on Level 4.

Pre 1944/45 Parliamentary Papers

Printed Copies
The Library has an incomplete collection of Parliamentary Papers published before 1944/45. This collection is shelved in a separate sequence from the post 1944/45 collection and is arranged chronologically by Parliamentary session and numerically by volume within a session.
Nineteenth Century Parliamentary Papers held in the Library are listed in the University Library Extra Series publication No.13 `A list of Parliamentary Papers Published Before 1900 Held in the University Library`, marked copies of which are available on the Government Publications Catalogues shelves.

Microfiche
The microfiche collection is kept on closed access and applications for papers in this collection should be made at the Level 4 Information Desk or at the Main Counter on Level 2.
An index to the microfiche collection, `Subject Catalogue of the House of Commons Parliamentary Papers 1801-1900` (5 vols.) compiled by Peter Cockton, is shelved at Government Publications Catalogues.

Pre 1944/45 Parliamentary Papers can be traced via the Irish Universities Press indexes and Ford's Breviates, both located on the shelves labelled Government Publications Catalogues.

Post 1944/45 Parliamentary Papers

Parliamentary Papers after 1944/45 are not catalogued except when there is a second copy shelved in the main Dewey sequence. Prior to being bound the unbound parts are arranged in boxes in three sequences in the Parliamentary Papers section:
Command Papers are arranged numerically.
House of Commons Bills are arranged chronologically by session and numerically within a session.
House of Commons Papers are arranged chronologically by session and numerically within a session.
We bind up Parliamentary Papers in the same arrangement used by the House of Commons Library and delay binding until the sessional index is ready. Papers in the bound volumes and unbound parts can be traced via the Stationery Office lists. Papers published from 1980 can be traced via UKOP. The full text of many Parliamentary Papers is available from the UK Parliament web pages at http://www.parliament.uk
