Standing Committee Debates
These are verbatim reports of debates of Standing Committees
appointed to consider Bills following
their second reading. Standing Committees are lettered
`A', `B',
`C' etc. and in bound volumes this `alphabetical' arrangement
is followed except in the case of Scottish and Welsh
debates which are unlettered and are bound at the end
of the sessional volumes. Each volume is indexed but
there is no general index to the sessional set. It
is necessary, therefore, to trace the letter of the
Standing Committee which considered a Bill before
the report of the debate can be found. This can be
done
by checking the Stationery
Office annual lists where,
under the heading House
of Commons Parliamentary Debates (in
the Parliamentary
Papers section) the debates are
listed alphabetically by names of the Bills considered,
together with the name and letter of the Standing Committee.
The Library has Commons debates from 1967/68 onwards
and Lords debates from 1970 onwards. The full text
of recent Standing Committee debates is available from
the UK Parliament Web pages, http://www.parliament.uk.
