State Papers

In this Library the term `State Papers' is used in two different ways:
In common with general usage to refer to the separate category of Command Papers which until 1978/79 were collected together in volumes at the end of each set of Parliamentary Papers where they were grouped under two headings:
State Papers: General and International
State Papers: Treaties

From 1979/80 the papers in the sessional volumes are arranged numerically so state papers are scattered throughout the sequence of Command Papers.

As a Library location. The section called `State Papers' in the Library contains Journals of the House of Commons and House of Lords and publications issued by the Public Record Office. The latter are arranged on the shelves in the same order as they appear in Sectional list no. 24 `British National Archives`. Also in our `State Papers' sequence are the publications of the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts, which are arranged in the same way as they appear in Sectional list no 17 `Publications of the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts`. The indexes in these Sectional lists facilitate tracing these publications.
