Connection
to Digimap
What is it?
Digimap is a Collection of EDINA services that deliver maps and map data of Great Britain to UK tertiary education. Data is available either to download to use with appropriate application software such as GIS or CAD, or as maps generated by Digimap online.
The Library has access to the following Digimap collections
- Digimap - Ordnance Survey Collection
- Historic Digimap - historic maps from Landmark
- Geology Digimap - geological maps and data from the British Geological Survey
Digimap allows users to view and print contemporary and current Ordnance Survey maps of any location in Great Britain at a series of predefined scales. Advanced tasks that Digimap enables are:
- downloading map data for use, for example, in GIS software on a user's own desktop
- advanced cartographic tasks, such as user-specified scale, combining datasets on a map, large format printing
- gazetteer functions on place names
More detailed information is available from EDINA.
Historic Digimap - historic maps from Landmark
This historic mapping facility delivers Landmark historic Ordnance Survey maps of Great Britain to UK Higher and Further Education.
The service includes the following maps:
- all available County Series maps at 1:2,500 and 1:10560 scales published between 1843 and 1939
- all available National Grid maps at 1:1,250, 1:2,500 and 1:10560/10,000 scales published from 1945 and before the introduction of the OS digital Land-Line product.
Existing Digimap users do not need to register again to use this new service.
More detailed information is available from EDINA.
Geology Digimap
Geology Digimap delivers geological maps and data from the British Geological Survey (BGS). Geology maps and data are available at scales of 1:50,000, 1:250,000 and 1:625,000. You can view maps through a web browser, save maps for printing and download the geological map data for use in geographical information systems.
The following data are available as both maps generated online and as data to download:
- 1:625,000 solid and drift geology
- 1:250,000 solid and drift geology
- 1:50,000 solid and drift geology, mass movement and artificial ground
- the BGS Lexicon of named Rock Units
Existing Digimap users do not need to register again to use this new service.
More detailed information is available from EDINA.
How to Register
The service is available to all members of the university, but before you can access the system you must carry out a registration procedure for Digimap.
Please note that all users must register with the new service, which started in January 2000, even if you were registered before with the trial service which ended in December 1999.
In order to register you must login to Digimap via the UK Access Management Federation using your campus id and password. At the Digimap home page select Digimap Ordnance Survey Collection and the Digimap Registration Page will appear. Scroll down and click on the Continue button to start the registration process.
Once you have filled in all the details, submit the form, (it is recommended that you print a copy of the form and keep it for your own personal use). Edina will check your registration and inform you by e-mail when your registration has been activated; it usually just takes a few days.
Use of the Service
Your attention is drawn to the conditions of use of OS data from Digimap, which set limitations on the purposes for which the data may be used, publications using the data, long-term storage of data and where the data may be used from. A copyright acknowledgement on all maps containing OS data from Digimap is mandatory. EDINA provide a Frequently Asked Questions page with detailed explanation of all these points.

Digimap Download
This guide, authored by Oxford Brookes University, provides further guidance on how to download mapping data from Digimap for use in CAD or GIS packages. In particular, section 4 covers the conversion of NTF files into DXF files (for AutoCAD).
Digimap Case Studies
Details of Digimap case studies, including 'highlights' by subject are available from Digimap's Case Studies web pages and from e-MapScholar teaching case study index.
