Engineering standards are used to ensure uniformity and consistency, reliability and safety. Standards reduce unnecessary duplication of effort, and provide a quality benchmark. They can be produced nationally, internationally or by industry.

Most standards organisations have their own web site, and often provide an online catalogue or index of their standards. Many of these catalogues will give free access to brief bibliographic details of their Standards.
