Root and Branch: public health under the nations' doctors

Presentation by Ian Johnson, Library Archivist
22 October at 6.00pm, Room 152, Level 1, Robinson Library

The papers of the former Chief Medical Officer and the University's Chancellor, Sir Liam Donaldson, have been catalogued in the University Library by Ian Johnson and provide a fascinating insight into how the Government viewed and responded to the major public health issues and crises from 1998 to 2010 under the guidance of the Nation's Doctor.

Ian's presentation will also show how this little understood role developed from its roots in the 1831 cholera epidemics, starting in the streets of Sunderland, and how Sir Liam's own links to the North East prepared him to become the 15th Chief Medical Officer for England.

The presentation is open to all and there will be an opportunity to view our exhibition of the papers on Level 2 of the Library afterwards.
