The 6th International Newcastle-upon-Tyne Postgraduate Conference in Linguistics took place on 7th April 2011 in the Research Beehive, and was attended by around 100 people. It was a very full day, with 27 oral presentations in three parallel sessions, as well as two guest plenary lectures, and a poster presentation session. The full abstract book can be downloaded here.
For the first plenary lecture, we welcomed Professor Ewa Dabrowska, Professor of Cognitive Linguistics (Northumbria University) who gave a talk on "(De)Constructing Sentences".
The second plenary session was given by Professor April McMahon, Forbes Professor of English Language at Edinburgh University who gave an interesting talk on "Language, variation, and change: new methods for collecting and comparing data"
CRiLLS kindly provided a prize for the conference’s best poster presentation.
The successful running of the 6th Postgraduate Conference in Linguistics is made possible by the generosity of a number of organisations.
We gratefully acknowledge the support of the Linguistics Association of Great Britain, and Newcastle University's Centre for Research in Linguistics and Language Sciences and of Northumbria University.
We are pleased to continue our relationship with Novitas-ROYAL, which has again become a sponsor of the conference. In addition to having the opportunity to submit a paper to Newcastle Working Papers for review, all presenters and delegates are encouraged to submit their work for consideration by Novitas-ROYAL. Novitas-ROYAL (Research on Youth and Language) is an open-access, international, and fully refereed (peer-reviewed) journal devoted to research and critical discussion about all aspects of learning and teaching of foreign languages.
