Research Programmes

The University's research programmes in Linguistics and Language Sciences are from a wide range of theoretical and applied areas, and have developed from our particular expertise. We offer two routes for our students;

a traditional model involving supervised research, alongside a thorough doctoral research training programme within the areas of:

• Education, Communication and Language Sciences
• English Language and Linguistics
• Modern Languages

or through two Integrated PhD programmes. These allow students to combine a substantial taught element in specialist areas alongside a doctoral level dissertation. The School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences has Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funding recognition for the +3 PhD route and for CASE projects involving collaboration with an external organisation. You may choose an Integrated PhD from:

• Educational and Applied Linguistics
• Linguistics and English Language

Postgraduate supervision is provided for projects that span academic schools and sub-disciplines – ensuring the best fit between graduate students' interests and the expertise of supervising staff. Please consult the list of staff and their profiles under the relevant Research Theme.
